Fishing with Wilderness Cottages.
Gordons Occasional fishing newsletter
South Loch Ness has been called The Inverness Lake District so
numerous are the lochs in this beautiful wilderness area known as
Stratherrick in South Loch Ness. The area stretches from the lochside
village of Dores at the northern end of Loch Ness to Fort Augustus at
the southern end of Loch Ness.
We realise that many of you just want to have a day out by the
lochside and enjoy the scenery whilst you dip your rod onto the loch and
maybe have a picnic at the same time. This is a marvellous way to spend
some of your holiday time in the Highlands and we thoroughly recommend
it for it's therapeutic properties. Fishing for wild brown trout is free
from most riverbanks and lochsides and just about anywhere on the banks
of Loch Ness, but if in doubt we will be pleased to advise you.
For the more serious fishermen, the list below is only a brief
description of what is available in the South Loch Ness area. For a more
detailed list and further information
please
ask us we will be pleased to give you addresses and phone
numbers of local experts.
THE WHITEBRIDGE LOCHS
There are a famous group of hill lochs scattered among the hills to
the south of Loch Ness. These lochs, due to their close proximity, are
favourites for fishing parties staying at our self catering
Kinbrylie house. The larger of the lochs, (most of
which have boats, no outboard motors are allowed since many of the lochs
are also the source of water supply to estates) provides excellent
fishing in wonderful yet very accessible remoteness. Many lochs are only
metres from a road, a fact that has a lot to do with the popularity of
the area, particularly from mid May through June and July when trout
fishing is at its best.
Many of the lochs are on private estates and boats can be arranged at
the Whitebridge Hotel reception. £15.00 per day, £9.00 per half day or
evening. Fishing tackle is available for hire and casts and flys are on
sale in the Whitebridge Hotel. Telephone 01456 486226
LOCH KNOCKIE
Loch Knockie is one of the better lochs, and with the right
conditions it will produce a mixed basket of fish from 10ozs to 1lb. Fly
Only
LOCH BRAN
As well as Brown Trout, this Loch is reputed to hold Arctic Char and
Ferox. No exceptional catches but a good days sport is rewarded with
hard fighting native brownies. Fly Only.
LOCH NAN LANN
A great beginners loch with an abundance of smaller fish in the
surface layer on which to practice fly casting with always the
possibility of hooking a Ferox or Char. Fly Only.
LOCH KILLIN
A deep loch with plenty of smaller brownies near the surface and
Ferox deeper down being taken mostly by spinning which is permitted.
this is good loch to take a newcomer to fly fish or spin since there are
always good catches of free taking trout.
Bank fishing only available on this loch.
LOCH MHOR
Fishing this beautiful loch is a favourite for guests at
Tigh-na Bruaich as the grounds of the cottage
extend right to the shoreline and there is about 200 yards of private
shoreline from which to fish for mainly Brown Trout. We do see the
Osprey take some nice fish during the summer!
