About Bayside Cottage

Bayside Cottage, Applecross peninsula - Wester Ross

Bayside cottage Applecross village on the beautiful Applecross peninsula - Wester Ross - sleeps 5, log fire, pets welcome.

Bayside Cottage, situated on the wildly beautiful Applecross peninsula, is an end terrace, recently renovated, estate cottage situated just a few feet from the sea shore, with stunning views across the Inner Sound towards Raasay, Rona and the magnificent Cuillin hills on the Isle of Skye. The cottage provides comfortable self catering accommodation for up to five people. Though remote, the cottage is just 200 yards from the Applecross Inn, winner of numerous awards, including recently awarded 'Best Pub Food in Britain' and 'Best Seafood Pub' in Scotland, to name just a couple. There is a general store for most provisions, and also a Cafe Bar, which has a relaxed and cheerful atmosphere and friendly, helpful staff.

The Gaelic name for the area of Applecross is “a Chomraich” which means “The Sanctuary”. You will understand, immediately you arrive, why it was given this name, as it is, without doubt, one of the most beautiful and remote wilderness areas on the west coast of Scotland, lying between the Scottish mainland mountain masses and the Isle of Skye. From the cottage, you can sit on the sea front and watch the sun go down over the Cuillins, the dramatic mountain range on the Isle of Skye, which, at times, can be truly awe inspiring and especially so during the long days of summer, when it hardly seems to get dark at all.

There are only two routes by road into Applecross village. The route via Kishorn is spectacular and possibly the only true alpine pass in Britain. It takes you over the 2053' high road called the Bealach na Ba, where, on a clear day, you'll see the kind of views one can only dream about. A passenger remarked when travelling this route that, looking out of the car window, it felt like flying in an aircraft !! From the viewpoint at the summit, you get panoramas north west to the Outer Hebrides, south to the Kintail mountains and scenery which will keep you gazing throughout the duration of this high level route.

The other route into Applecross is via Shieldaig and along the coast road, which also has fantastic views out to the western isles and small coastal communities and rocky coves, of which, no doubt, you will make mental notes, to return for a closer look during your holiday at Applecross.

A lovely, homely cottage in a beautiful location, the deck is a great addition to make even more of the spectacular views. Some lovely coastal and glen walks along the peninsula. The pub, 100 metres away has great food and a lively atmosphere. The Potting Shed another fab eatery a mile away. So isolation and community to dip into. We were lucky to add sunshine to the mix. The drive over the pass to Applecross is incredible.

The whole experience of renting Bayside Cottage for a week this month has been delightful. One feels very privileged sitting in the sun, on the decking, drinking G&T whilst watching Great Northern Divers and Eiders a few yards away, following a few hours walking in the Applecross hills.

Excellent presentation of this small fisherman a cottage on the coast road. Wonderful location. Very cosy ieven on the coldest days with ample heating and open fires. Well equipped and very clean. Wifi is a blessing because we use it to find places and opening times etc. Lovely welcome pack with milk and buit units to get started. No hesitation in recommending this place. Only reason for making very good instead of excellent is small rooms but it is what it is. Thanks to all for a pleasant stay.

Just returned from a wonderful week in Applecross. Bayside Cottage is cosy and well equipped, superbly situated overlooking the sea towards Skye and just a few steps from the excellent Applecross Inn. The tea and biscuits provided for our arrival plus a bottle of wine in the fridge were a nice welcoming touch. The drive over the pass to get there is dramatic, the landscape everywhere wild with magnificent views. It is great walking country with lots of wildlife. Heartily recommended!

Bayside was everything we'd hoped it would be - cosy; spectacular views out to sea; well equipped kitchen; open fire; comfy beds; amazing outside space and most of all - dog friendly. There are so many beautiful cottages we want to go to but can't because they don't take dogs, so finding Bayside was fantastic. We will definitely go back soon.

We already knew Applecross was a great location but the cottage just topped it off. It really was like a home from home. It had everything we needed and was just the right size for four adults, a baby and a dog! The kitchen was well stocked which made cooking meals nice and easy (although we did enjoy eating out at the pub and walled garden!). The amazing weather did help and we got to use the deck loads. Sitting on the comfy chairs watching the sun set was just magical.

Everything you could need is provided, as well as the warm welcome of tea, coffee, biscuits and wine - and a ready-to-light real fire! There are lots of great walks and day trips you can do from here, but with it's beautiful scenary, great food at the Inn and Walled Gardens, and a range of birds to watch from your window, you don't actually need to go anywhere!

Simply glorious. Cottage is abundantly well-provided, only a few yards from the outstanding Applecross Inn and in a staggeringly beautiful setting. Two aspects made our stay so memorable - doggy heaven for our two cocker spaniels, from Bonios on arrival to beach and hillside walks; and the weather in November - dry, warm and clear. A must to return, to enjoy the solitude and grandeur of the area.

The cottage was perfect, with really nice rooms and plenty of good facilities (not the usual bog-standard stuff).
My boyfriend (the self-appointed chef) loved the great kitchen complete with bread maker (plus flour, yeast and recipe books) and the wide range of herbs and spices to play with. We all loved the welcome tray of tea, biscuits, bottle of wine in the fridge and ready made fire in the grate, plus water and dog biscuits for our excitable puppy.
We had mostly good weather, but when not the fire and myriad of board games helped to while away the hours until we could justify going to the pub.
The views across the bay were stunning and a long time was spent just sitting on the bench at the front door or watching out of the windows.

Applecross was delightful: friendly with great food at the Inn and the Walled Garden, and we caught the Applecross Games which were excellent (the puppy won first prize in the dog show!). We have just returned from a fantastic week at Bayside Cottage- the best holiday we have had for a few years. The standard of accommodation was outstanding and excellent value. I was anxious about how my ’urban’ offspring (particularly the teenager) would adapt to such a remote and unspoilt area, but they were totally charmed by the beauty of the sunsets, loved racing down the large dune at Sand Beach, kayaking and rock climbing with the Sea and Mountain Guides, eating delicious pizza in the Flower Tunnel Cafe, and watching the local raft race. On the dull days we took a trip from Plockton to see the seal colony and visited the Eilean Donan Castle. When it was really wet We made homemade bread, cosied up to watch TV and played board games. My daughter commented that it was easier to make new friends as there were so few children around everyone was really friendly. Would really love to come again.

Absolutely superb! Such a warm welcome awaited us on our arrival with chilled wine, fresh flowers and even biscuits for the dog. The cottage was truly charming with evey possible amenity provided - not a thing was missing. Immaculately clean and tidy with towels and linen included. For a small cottage it is deceptively spacious with plenty room to spread out. The cottage is positioned in the very heart of Applecross surrounded by breathtaking scenery and panoramic views which take in the Cuillin Mountains. The front porch and benches outside provide an ideal viewing point for observing the local wildlife and taking in the magnificent sunsets. The location of the cottage is excellent for those who enjoy walking, wildlife and outdoor activities; at the same time providing a peaceful break. Quiet but not too remote, the village has a local Inn which is always busy serving a top class menu. Very friendly neighbours and a warm welcome from all the locals. Without doubt, Bayside Cottage can be very highly recommended, and we will be sure to return.

we really enjoyed our stay at Bayside Cottage ? it was great being so near the wonderfully welcoming Applecross Inn and the delicious food they served. Going over the pass of the cattle was daunting especially if you meet a camper van at the summit! But we had to get used to it otherwise we wouldn?t have ventured far from the cottage. Not that you needed to ? I?ve lost count of the number of times I?ve said ?wow? (kids got fed up with me for saying this) at the scenery and stunning views. We saw dolphins at nearby Shieldieg, red deer on the mountainse and enjoyed our seal trip from Plockton. The weather was typically Scottish but we did have two glorious days where we fitted in as much as possible. A truly mystical experience in the best scenery the British Isles has to offer, in my humble opinion.
We first stayed at Bayside Cottage in late May. It was an idyllic refuge from our frantic city life in central London. Our children spent happy hours playing with an otter on the stony beach just outside the cottage front door, watching seals sunbathing a mile down the coast, playing in the soft sand and glittering rock pools of another beach a mile or two in the other direction and waiting for the dormant volcano completely recognisable on the syline of Rassay, opposite, to erupt. My son wants to ’look for more seals’, when we return this year, and he ’wants to look for sharks through the window of the tiny bedroom’ which he and his sister take turns to sleep in.

When we weren’t enjoying our childrens’ simple pleasure in this breathtaking and completely unspoiled natural landscape, we were all happy together in the renowned Applecross Inn, eating giant prawns and fantastic chips, or in the very pleasant cafe at Applecross House.

We also went on a very happy day trip to Plockton.

I cannot wait to get back to Bayside Cottage - which is so comfortable and a real home from home - to enjoy its peace and tranquillity, and to marvel at its fabulous surroundings. If we did not live so very far away we would visit much more regularly than the annual trip we have promised ourselves.

I have to say I’m biased, as this is a part of the the UK that I’m totally overwhelmed by. I have cycled most of Scotland and the Islands and have found this spot to be a perfect location to stop, relax and to recharge batteries. The locals are friendly and the Pub/Hotel is just along the road, so no need to cook (Tip - The Applecross Hotel bar can be very busy at weekends & in the summer. The entire menu is available as acarryout). If you are lucky, Otters, Whales & Dolphins can be seen, all from the lounge, as the sea laps feet from the front door. It’s easy with the views/ surroundings to forget the accomadation. The cottage is fitted out to a high level & I can’t wait to get back there.
