The Isle of Barra or “Eilean Bharraigh” in gaelic, is the smallest and remotest of the islands in the Outer Hebrides. Barra is a small island measuring just five miles across by eight miles long, but noted for its beauty. However small it maybe, the visiting holiday maker will find all sorts of activities to keep them busy. It is sometimes descriped as a compact paradise and whatever your interest, cycling on secluded roads, fishing, walking on the hills or on the long white sandy beaches, or simply enjoying the scenery, you will find it on Barra. At certain times of the year the renowned ceilidh dances and social gathering are legendary and everyone is always welcome.

For history lovers the main town of Castlebay is home to Kisimul Castle, Kisimul translates as “rock in the bay” and once visitors see it they will know why. It is open daily for visitors from April through to the end of September, a worthy expedition beginning with a short boat trip across the bay from the pier in Castlebay.

The white sands of the nearby Isle of Vatersay are also a must see, the Isle linked to Barra by causeway is famous as it was here in 1949 that the classic film “Whisky Galore” was made. The film shot in black and white transpires with the Island you’ll see with its colourful wild flowers and vast landscapes. The Hebrides can be descriped as one of the last real Wilderness areas of Scotland, the wildlife rare, and the waters home to basking sharks, dolphins, otters and whales.
