The Dumfries and Galloway area is described by many as the region of contrast starting with the 200 mile coastline varying from craggy outcrops, long sandy beaches, spectacular cliffs to enchanting seaside towns and villages such as Portpatrick and Kirkcudbright the ‘artists town’. This rich coast line supports a varied wildlife and welcomes thousands of waders and wildfowl each year to overwinter making it a bird watchers paradise.
Inland you will find soft rolling countryside, ancient forests and high peaks such as Merrick the highest peak in Southern Scotland. For walkers there are numerous marked routes and trails including the 212 mile Southern Upland Way. The regions rich array of landscapes also caters well for fishing, golfing, mountain biking and more extreme outdoor activities near Gatehouse of Fleet.
The rich culture heritage can be found throughout the region. Dumfries is the region's largest town and the real gateway to Galloway, where better to learn more of Robbie Burns the areas most famous poet? You will find numerous museums, castles, gardens and arts and craft centres to satisfy the most curious. Galloway forest Park has been unveiled as the first Dark Sky Park in the UK and provides some of the best stargazing opportunities. The excellent growing conditions of the region offer a host of quality producers including beef, ice cream and cheese. Experience farmers markets, smokehouses and Scotlands most southerly distillery at Bladnoch.
