This beautiful self catering building is an authentic log cabin. Built by Canadian foresters in 1980, it took them 2 years to take whole logs from the local forest and knit them all together to make the present day comfortable, and very cosy 2 bedroomed cabin.

Situated in a secluded forest location, 2 miles from the centre of the Loch Ness side village of Fort Augustus, in the heart of the Great Glen. Many guests return year after year just to spend time in this unique log cabin. Understandably, given its superb setting and central location, (Fort Augustus is in the geographical centre of the Highlands of Scotland) this is one of the most popular holiday choices in the Highlands. Through the village runs the River Oich and the picturesque Caledonian canal and lock system, built by Thomas Telford in the early 1800's.

Set in the forest with only a few other houses nearby. Close to the Great Glen cycle way and many miles of forest and hill trails. The cottage is warm and cosy throughout the year and is an ideal retreat for those wanting to spend some time walking, relaxing, and for quietly pursuing your favourite pastimes.

There are many forest and hill walks from the doorstep. The River Oich riverside walk is only three quarters of a mile away, and a walk to the nearest pubs and restaurants in the village of Fort Augustus is one and half miles. The proximity to attractions also makes this a favourite destination for young families. With Fort William (Ben Nevis) and Inverness, only an hour away by car. The West coast also only a little over an hours drive.

If your heart is set on a holiday in a log cabin and The Log House is booked then why not have a look our similar properties that can be found on the Log Cabins page.

The Log House was pleasant enough in a quiet location. The Log House does have a problem with rodents, probably mice. Shouldn't be a complete surprise due to the location. I would fix the ventilation in the bathroom as the mould was increasing throughout the 2 weeks. Dogs are fine, however if you allow dogs, you'll need removable covers to remove the smell of dogs, not everyone is a super fan of wet dog smell. So good, however needs Improvement.

A really unique place to stay, a genuine log cabin. Plenty of heating (which was necessary when we went, lots of snow, beautiful scenery) and the beds are really comfortable. Great location with less than a five minute drive from Fort Augustus which is a lovely little town. Only one suggestion for an improvement would be to add a hand rail to the shower wall as an added safety measure getting in and out. A lovely property!

This log house is a supreme rustic accommodation - absolutely beautiful. Several beautiful woodland walks are available down to River Oich from the doorstep. The accomodation itself is really lovely, with a great bath/shower in a modern bathroom, comfy sofas and well equipped kitchen. Great beds/bedrooms too. Heating is via gas-fired radiators and also the wood burner for evenings......a really warm and cosy space all round.....and great woodland views from the house too. Can't say enough about it and we will certainly make this a 'regular'.

A lovely spot to have a log cabin. It has everything you need for the week. Close to the village for a pint and food. Great base to explore from. A nice comfy living room with a beautiful view, listening to the birds till late and watching the bats. We had a great time for the week, my only criticism would be it needs a deep clean as some of the area were a little grubby. Would recommend if you want a relaxing holiday.

What a joy! Really comfortable and the perfect base for exploring the area. Just far enough away from everything but also just near enough to everything. The house is really comfortable and well-equipped - the wi-fi was reliable enough for us to use an Amazon fire stick for Netflix and Disney+. The bird table bought us some exciting visitors in the shape of a red squirrel and a woodpecker and you can use the book in the house to identify your feathered visitors. The nightly departure of the bats also provided some entertainment - although any light sleepers in the double bedroom may need some ear plugs to not be disturbed by their nocturnal activities. We had a truly wonderful week :-)

The Bathroom is new, and the Cabin is very well equipped and full of Character. If you want peace, quiet and relaxation with fresh air in beautiful surroundings you will find it here. Another lovely week spent in the Log House, just love this place so much, well equipped and in such a perfect spot. The runs/walks up into the surrounding forest are just beautiful and the 5km loop right outside the front door is perfect for an early morning run to start the day. Great heating (not that we needed it this visit), fab log burner for the colder months and a really good shower (very important I think!) The only issue we had was the bats, every other stay they have been no problem, but this time they seem to have moved up to the head of the bed end of the bedroom and were so noisy that they kept me awake or woke me up most nights, not sure if its possible to relocate them.

We thoroughly enjoyed our first holiday in a traditional log cabin. The Log House is really comfortable - perfect for lounging around during the one wet day of our week's holiday when we lit the log stove and just enjoyed being indoors. The bathroom and kitchen have been fairly recently modernised and although there's no dishwasher, the view from the kitchen sink makes up for that - in June, a sea of bluebells stretching towards the forest. Some reviewers have commented on the bats roosting in the roof space, and although on balance it would be better if they were relocated and holes stopped up, they didn't keep us awake. Possibly because of the very comfy mattress!

Had an amazing stay at the log house, it really is so special. We loved doing a run through the forest (right outside the entrance to the log house) this also leads to the river Oich walk which I would also recommend. We seen a few bats outside the log house in the evening which was nice. Heard quite a few noises in the roof space but it is literally in the middle of a forest so it's to be expected. We loved the fire (when we finally managed to get it working ha). Great stay, can't wait to return

Really enjoyed our stay at the log house, lovely peaceful setting, we were very lucky with the weather whilst there. we used it as our base from which to explore the area we got as far as Skye and Aviemore, the highlands are so picturesque, around every turn in the road there seemed to be another great vista I will never forget our first sight of Eilean Donan castle on our way to Skye, or the magnificent sunset seen from Mallaig on the return journey, simply stunning. Back at the Log House we had red squirrels, robins and blue tits eating seeds and nuts we had bought for them and not a pigeon in site. And a walk through the forest was really relaxing, altogether an amazing stay.

We had another great week at the Log House but, be warned, there are a lot of bats roosting in the roof space. This didn't bother us previously and may indeed be a strong appeal to many people (if you like bats) but if you're not keen on bats do be aware. They were very noisy in the main bedroom and we did have one find it's way into the kitchen one night. If you like bats though it really is a super cabin.

The Log House is extremely cosy and well equipped - just what I was looking for. It felt like a home from home! Idyllic walks nearby in the forest too. Good internet too, which was a nice surprise. Didn't need the log burner as weather was mild and central heating perfectly adequate. Did receive an extra delivery of logs though, which is a nice touch! The only issue I would say is the weather in Fort Augustus is extremely wet all the time and the gutters/down pipes desperately needed maintenance as they were leaking. The kitchen has pretty much everything you need except could do with an extractor fan to remove the cooking smells. Something that did stick in my mind was the squeaky kitchen floor which drove us mad. Overall, a lovely place in a great central location in the Great Glen.

The house is very nice and is situated in one of the most beautiful regions in Scotland. In summer it is an absolute stunner. In winter however, it would be nice if the cottage would have been pre-heated before arrival. It takes a few days to get all the cold out. The equipment - kitchen, bathroom, wood stove, wood - all very complete! We would certainly return, but not at this time of year. And, a personal welcome would be very much appreciated.

We stayed in this property 12 years ago before children and decided to return with children aged 9 and 7. The Log House is comfy and well equipped and has everything you may need and appears to have been recently updated and was spotlessly clean. Our daughters enjoyed going out in the early evening to watch the bats flying from the property. The property is a decent walk (about 30 minutes) from the centre of Fort Augustus or you can drive into the centre with ease. We arranged for Tesco to deliver shopping to the Log House to stop us needing to take this with us and they found it with ease. It was lovely to go back and we will go back in the future again.

For many years, since the distinctive and charming Log House jumped out from the pages of an old Wilderness Cottages brochure, I have dreamed about staying at this quirky retreat. My dreams came true in August 2017 when my wife and I, and our two boys aged thirteen and one, drove up to Fort Augustus with a couple of mountain bikes atop the car for a week of Highland living. We didn't have great weather but this presented a fine excuse to light the cosy fire each evening. The cabin really is very comfortable and inviting. The warm glow from the lamps, the roaring fire, the traditional log walls and the impressive greenery out of every window, not to mention the decorative antique winter sports equipment, all conspire to convince you that you're in a bygone era, a hundred miles from civilisation. All the kitchen appliances are high quality and in good condition. The kitchen floor is very creaky so if you're the type who tries to sneak into the biscuit jar in the dead of night for forty custards while your partner sleeps, be warned. I was very impressed by the bathroom. You would not expect such a clean, modern, fully-functional bathroom suite in such a cabin, but there it is; a taste of 5 star hotel life in the Great Glen. The bedrooms are wonderful but, at 6'3", I prefer a bed in which I can hang my feet out of the bottom. Not a major problem, it just meant I slept diagonally and my wife curled up and slept on her pillow. Woodland surrounds the cabin and pretty paths and trails can be explored in every direction. We rode our bikes every day and enjoyed the nearby River Oich Trail and the climb up to the magnificent (but dangerous!) viewpoint at Torr Dhuin. Another good ride goes from Fort Augustus to Invermoriston on the Great Glen Way. I would recommend taking the High Route on the outbound trip and then returning on the easier and slightly shorter Low Route. The views of Loch Ness from high above are fantastic, almost as good as the beer at Glenmoriston Arms Hotel. The Log House was everything I wanted it to be, and more. True, we could have done better for wildlife and weather but this was made up for with excellent WiFi, Freesat TV and a secure bike shed.

I stayed at the log house for a week in July, with my hubby and 2 boys aged 8 and 2. We absolutely loved it, we knew by looking the pictures it looked great, but the pictures don't do it justice, it's even better. There's everything you need, for week of self catering, it's like home from home. We especially loved the log fire on a night time, so cosy and warm. My hubby and 8 year son loved walking down to river, surrounding are beautiful, you well truely feel like your in the Scottish Highlands. We were only 5 mins car journey away from Fort Augustus village, which is lovely to walk around, have spot of lunch or dinner. We did the Loch Ness evening cruise, it was great if we didn't believe in Nessy before, we sure as do now lol. You are only a 50 min drive to Inverness, which we visited one of the days with the boys, and visted the swimming pool, which I can highly recommend for kids, it a great wee pool with flumes and slides. Our only disappointment of the log house was having to leave, we will definitely be visiting again.

Just had a weeks holiday at this Log Cabin and had one of the best holidays in a very long time. The cabin is like something out of a fairy tale. Very Hansel and Gretel set in a forest just a few miles from Fort Augustus. Great location to visit Inverness, local distilleries, Fort William and Skye. If you're after a road trip with spectacular scenery go to Eilean Donan Castle on the way to Skye. Possibly the best scenery I've ever witnesses in my 44 years. As for the cabin its very cosy and quiet. No street lights or road noise. Only fly in the ointment ( literally) was was bitten to death by midgies but this hasn't put me off. This holiday was meant to be a cheaply as couldn't afford the normal trip for four to the med this year. I've asked the kids where they would rather go next year here or Spain and they said here. So we will be back. Thank you to the owners of this place.

We visited the Log House for a week beginning of June 2016 and had a great time....the garden ,front and back, is a sun trap if the weather allows, the bed was one of the most comfy we've had and only found 1 spider in all the time there lol. There are great walks both to the left and right of the garden entrance, down to the left takes you to the River Oich which was gorgeous and to the right takes you out to Fort Augustus village, which is only a 20/25 minute walk (or 5 min drive). We saw finches, robins and at least 2 woodpeckers on the birdtable which you can watch from inside the house, and 3 deer out front, but you need to be quiet if you want to see them as they are as quick as a flash! From the village you can go on a Loch Ness cruise, which is well worth it, and there's a shop you can buy your groceries, we used it nearly every day, it always had what we needed and plenty of souvenir shops ...and the chip shop there was 1 of the best. If anything we'd say if you want to eat out then the best time is when the visiting buses are there, as otherwise the places to eat can be pretty quiet, but that is a small thing in the bigger picture. Once you get used to where you are and the house itself then it's a great wee place to stay, yes there are a couple houses nearby but we hardly came across anyone, the postwoman and a couple walking down to the river and they couple houses might just give you that wee bit of security you might need, knowing someone else is there.....apart from that it really is a wilderness log house..enjoy if you go..

Well, we are just home from our stay in The Log House and we had a great time!...1st we'll say if you can get the weather then the garden is a suntrap and we were lucky as it was sunny for nearly the full week we were there... The house itself is clean and we found it very easy to stay in, everything we needed was there and funny enough for a house out in the woods we found only 1 spider, and i think we disturbed it or it would've stayed in its corner... We saw deer out front and there's a bird table round the side where we saw, and got great camera footage of, tits, finches, robins and a woodpecker!! The centre of Fort Augustus is a couple mins drive or about 20-30 walk and is easy to get to, where there's a shop for groceries, some pubs, lots of souvenirs, a cruise onto Loch Ness and of course the Caledonian Canal... From the house there are walks direct down to the River Oich and through the forest and a few mins drive away you can walk upwards, the views are brilliant! We returned to the log cabin after fond memories of it from 8 years ago....and I am so glad we did. The cabin is in a secluded area in the forest on the edge of Fort Augustus. The cabin is a genuine log cabin built from the trees in the surrounding woods, the scenery is spectacular, the wildlife is varied and on your doorstep ..there were deer outside in the morning, bats performing aerobatics in the evening, a Barn owl hunting in the clearing in front of the cabin, a woodpecker and all manner of finches visiting the bird table in the garden (take bird feed with you) and despite not actually seeing the pine marten...we left out food for it and heard it outside. The last time we went a little robin visited the cabin daily and it obviously passed this trait on as we had another one do the same. The cabin itself has such a welcoming feel and is cosy and warm. There has been some improvements to it since we were there last (new kitchen, carpets and log burner), and the owner (who spoke to us on the day we went) told us that the bathroom is being replaced as well (it does need it but really, we don't live in the bathroom do we!) There were a couple of negative comments about this in the guest book but I totally ignored them because they totally missed the point of how this cabin makes you feel....it's a peaceful, naturally beautiful, warm and friendly place...not a 5 star clinical hotel! The beds are wonderfully comfortable too and we had some of the best night's sleep we have had in ages. My only disappointment was leaving it! We love this place and will no doubt return again and again. Plenty good pubs to choose from in the village and if you want a special meal, The Lovat is fab. For anyone else going, enjoy the respite. ..I am jealous :)

The log cabin is in a great location surrounded by woodland and the walks from there are great. Our week was sunny and warm so this was a bonus for the stunning views of the mountains. The walk up Ben Nevis a highlight as it was sunshine all the way to the top with snow on the last 400 m of ascent. Wildlife great and saw a pine marten which is very rare. Would recommend it for a place to stay.

We had a fantastic week, even the weather couldn’t spoil it! The Log House is gorgeous, well equipped and in a fab location. There seemed to be wildlife everywhere you looked and the scenery is right out the window! We really couldn’t have chosen better- definitely recommend *****

What a fantastic setting and a great, proper log cabin! So nice to be far from the madding crowd and be wakened by birdsong as opposed to traffic.
The cottage itself was warm, homely and spacious and the stove was very cosy in the evening. The Robin we’d read about in the guest reviews did not disappoint and appeared the moment we arrived, waiting patiently for us to unpack the bread. We were also visited by a blackbird and a swallow which actually flew into the living room! The surrounding area is excellent for cycling and walking but take the insect repellant if you’re out and about mid afternoon onwards to ward off the evil midge. We can recommend the Lovat Arms and The Bothy for good food and drink (Ailsa at The Lovat Arms was really friendly and informative about the area)We’ll definitely be back!!

Just returned from the log house ,turn into the lane and you will fall in love with this beautifuly presented and unique property,it has a warm and inviting feel that we found hard to leave. The location is ideal for seeing the treasures that Scotland has,(but do spend time enjoying the
house and garden )We found lovely walks through the woods down to the river, the village is a delight, good places to eat and lovely people. A boat trip from the village on Loch Ness is interesting with sona images of the Loch, it is so deep ....maybe Nessie does live there .
Nairn has a good beach for a day out,and of course Ben Nevis range is a must, after leaving the gondola take the walk left then the walk right.very scenic.
At the log house look out for deer and many birds also Mr Robin, he visits every day and will come into the kitchen ....almost a pet. We had a wonderful stay at the Log house, just wanted to stay........this is a "must have " holiday

We had an amazing stay at The Log House from 26th April to 29th.
As soon as we pulled up in the car we knew we would love the place and as soon as we walked in we felt at home straight away and could have stayed forever. The location is perfect as it still close enough to Fort Augustus to drive (few minutes) but also close enough to walk to from the cabin (15-20 mins). We hope to return soon.
This goes down as the best place I have booked for a short break.

The Log House was without doubt the best self-catering accommodation we have stayed in within the UK. It was very well equipped, comfortable and in the most beautiful of areas. The house itself was like something from a fairytale ! Mr Lee the owner made us feel very welcome.

We have just returned from our week at the Log House, Fort Augustus a real log cabin in a fantastic location with plenty of forest walks on the doorstep. Deer in the ’front garden’ woodpeckers and pine marten in the surrounding forest and a monster in the nearby loch. What more could you ask for?! I highly recommend a stay in this unique cabin.

We had a fantastic time at the Log House from the 10th-17th June. There are many walks straight from the door and in a lovely peaceful setting. Fort Augustus is a 20minute walk away and a lovely little town with good choice of eating places. The Bothy serves lovely food and the staff are very friendly.
The Log House is well equipped - watch out for the Bats at night and you can feed the Robins from the door. Highly recommended.

The Log House was set in stunning scenery in a forest location, a stones throw from Loch Ness. Excellent facilities, great for a family! A good choice if you want a base to tour from, or great for walking. We saw more wildlife in 7 days than we see in 7 years in Coventry! Don’t hesitate its an excellent choice, I have no doubt we’ll be back. Thanks Bob.

The log house really is special and the location is fantastic and easy to get to, the standard of cleanliness was very good and Mr Lee did all he could to ensure our stay was perfect.
The walks in the area were fantastic and the only thing that let us down was the weather, but all in all, we took home great memories and fantastic photographs and we will definately be returning to the Log House, a very special place indeed.

We have just returned from a wonderful week at the Log House. The owner is fantastic and very helpful and the cottage incredibly well equipped. It is situated in a lovely forest by the River Oich and very handy for popping into Fort Augustus. I would go back again in a shot and would def stay in that area again as it is such a good base for seeing the rest of the Highlands. We only had one bad day weather-wise which isn’t bad going. I wish we were back there now!!

The Log Cottage is unique accommodation set in glorious countryside. Me, my wife and my parents stayed at the Log Cottage 10th-17th April and enjoyed every minute. The cottage was clean and well fitted out, the owner courteous and helpful. I will certainly be returning to the area via Wilderness Cottages.
