Old Lock Keepers Cottage

We've passed The Old Lock Keepers Cottage a number of times when boating through the Caledonian Canal. More recently, we decided to try a stay there in October 2022. It's very comfortable and warm with a somewhat quirky layout. The setting is idyllic. The peace and quiet make for a very relaxed stay, whilst Fort Augustus to the north or Laggan Lock to the south are both easily accessible by cycling or walking along the relatively flat tow path. If you opt for a stay when the canal is open to traffic, you can enjoy watching all the various pleasure and commercial craft make their way through Cullochy Lock right outside your front door. We'll visit again for sure.

This cottage is perfect to get away from busy life, well situated to visit nevis range and the cairngorms, and fab to come back to after a busy day walking in the mountains. Incredibly cosy and loads of space for two families (which we had) will definitely book a return visit soon, thank you!!

What can I say? This place is an absolute Haven! This was our second stay at Upper Folds and we will sure will return. The place is cosy with the log burner, we were completely snowed in for the full week but that just made it all the more magical, if you're looking for an escape from the rat race, this is the place. The only way our stay could have been any better is if my name magically appeared on the deeds to this property.

Another wonderful week staying in the Coltsfoots. The hosts are very welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. The log cabin is well laid out, ,scrupulously clean and well equipped. The Coltsfoots is our favourite place to stay in the Highlands. First stay in winter and it snowed, brilliant.

This was our 2nd stay at upper folds, both times staying in November. The cottage is spotless and well equipped. The underfloor heating and the wood burning stove kept it more than warm enough, and there's an endless supply of logs too. Very relaxing time and the secure garden ideal to let the pup run around and explore. Definitely worth the drive along the track to be in such peaceful surroundings! Remember there's no wifi or mobile signal, except in one wee specific corner of the dining room, so we downloaded movies etc to the I pad to watch.

This log house is a supreme rustic accommodation - absolutely beautiful. Several beautiful woodland walks are available down to River Oich from the doorstep. The accomodation itself is really lovely, with a great bath/shower in a modern bathroom, comfy sofas and well equipped kitchen. Great beds/bedrooms too. Heating is via gas-fired radiators and also the wood burner for evenings......a really warm and cosy space all round.....and great woodland views from the house too. Can't say enough about it and we will certainly make this a 'regular'.

Our stay (two adults and one dog) at Tor Cottage was even better than we hoped. The cottage is comfortable, relaxing and very clean. It felt spacious and modern. Our second stay at this beautiful cottage and already have booked for next year. The cottage is spotlessly clean and has everything you could wish for to make your stay perfect. It is set in a private, peaceful location but only a 10 minute walk from Fort Augustus centre. We enjoyed the forest and river walks near the cottage and also along the Caledonian canal. Well recommended. Thank you.

Stunning location with an amazing view across the loch to the Five Sisters. House has been renovated to the highest specifications and has very good quality furniture, linen, kitchen equipment and excellent WiFi. The owners have provided a fascinating background history about the croft and how it has been in their family for many years. Located in a really peaceful area on a quiet single track road. It is well placed for walking and for driving to lots of places of interest. We had a lovely relaxing stay and would highly recommend a visit to the cottage.

Shore Cottage

Shore cottage was recommended to us by a friend so we understood the wonderful isolation it was going to offer and superb views, the cottage is adequate and homely, the open fire in the living room is lovely, shame the log burner in the conservatory was out of action. The advice that a 4 wheel drive vehicle is required to gain access from the main Highway must be adhered to as the rough track from the farm needs this type of vehicle to complete your journey to Shore Cottage, plenty of ground clearance on the vehicle is essential, particularly once you cross the bridge for the final part of the journey. Overall a wonderful holiday cottage sited in a beautiful area, just wish the road ways in and out were more accessible. Also local golf courses at Portpatrick and Stranraer are lovely enjoyable courses.

We had a very good holiday at Shore Cottage. The cottage is well equipped, warm and comfortable, however, there is no heating in the conservatory which was a shame as we were unable to spend much time in there to enjoy the view of the sea. We found that there was very poor mobile signal at the cottage, which meant we were unable to make calls or use the internet. Overall, it was a very enjoyable and relaxing holiday and we hope to return again.

Wildwood

Just had a fabulous holiday at Wildwood for the October school break with our teenage twin daughters. It is in a really peaceful setting amongst the forest which was absolutely stunning with all the autumn colours. Its a great location being reasonable walking distance from Fort Augustus and Loch Ness but feels very tranquil. There are some lovely easy walks you can do right from the house (if you aren't 'proper' walkers but love being outdoors like us) lots of trails off into the woodlands or along the River Oich. Loads to see just a short drive away, would recommend Urqhart Castle and the Falls of Foyers. Fort Augustus itself is interesting with the canal and very pretty. The cafes and gift shops are fine but a little pricey. We loved the mill shop though, great value, and also just along the road at Invermoriston the Clog and Craft shop is well worth a visit. The house is really spacious, clean and comfortable and great value for the rates charged. Loved the upstairs sitting room with great views of the trees and loads of comfy seating, we had a couch each! Kitchen is a great size too and well equipped. Was also brilliant to have a separate room for all the outdoor wear and extra stuff! I could get used to the walk in wardrobe/ dressing room in the master bedroom too! It was a perfect base to explore this lovely area, and would be comfortable even with another two or three guests. Highly recommend.

We stayed 6 night in North Lodge, in late October. The cottage was spotlessly clean, warm and very well equipped with everything you might need. Lovely, peaceful walks around the estate from the doorstep and lots of feathered visitors to the garden...including dunnocks, jays, a woodpecker and tree creepers. Our two dogs loved pottering around and paddling in the little stream in the garden - but be aware the garden isn't fully fenced if your pooch is liable to take off. Lots of great places to visit in the local area. The beach at Sands of Luce is beautiful and don't miss the Fish Pool at Port Logan. Booking and communication was easy and straightforward.

The cottage is well looked after and had everything that we needed. At the time that we visited, it was warm and cosy, although we did wonder what it would be like in very cold weather due to it being such a large, tall space. We didn't light the log burner but I'm sure it would have been very cosy, had we done so.
