Rona Cottage is a modern detached bungalow set on a 4-acre croft just 80 yards from the seashore with private beach access. From picture windows, you can enjoy the view overlooking the sea, the stunning sunsets and views to Skye, Harris and Lewis. The location is an ideal spot for a relaxing holiday with the North Coast 500 route located close by.
The property is all on the one level and has a large sitting and dining room, a well-equipped kitchen with all the usual appliances and two bedrooms, a double and a twin. Completing the facilities is a bathroom with a bath and separate shower cubicle. The property has oil central heating throughout, ensuring that the house is warm and comfortable no matter when you choose to visit and wifi is available. Outside the enclosed garden has garden furniture and ample parking.
The village of Melvaig is a quiet crofting community some nine miles from Gairloch and just three miles from one of the main attractions in this area, Rubha Reidh. Here you find the lighthouse, built-in 1910 and a path that leads you to the old landing stage alongside a rocky cleft originally used to service the lighthouse. Beyond that, the path though rough and, at times, difficult to follow above cliffs leads to Camas Mor beach, a beautiful and secluded spot and well worth a visit.
Your nearest shop is about six miles away at Big Sands (caravan and camping) where there is a licensed grocery from April – October supplying most things you should need for your holiday. Further afield Gairloch has a good range of facilities including a supermarket, butcher, post office, craft and grocery shops as well as coffee shops and restaurants.
The location is a great base to explore with the Torridon Mountains just a short distance away. There are numerous sandy beaches and bays around Melvaig, Gairloch and Red Point. Flowerdale Estate is an area of outstanding beauty with a spectacular waterfall, an 18th-century house and lots of walks to suit all ages and abilities. Beinn Eighe Nature Reserve offers woodland trails and mountainous walks all situated within ancient pine forests and local wildlife includes deer, dragonflies, golden eagles and crossbills as well as nesting sea eagles.
From Gairloch harbour, you can take cruises around the bay and into the Minch to spot porpoises, whales and dolphins as well as basking sharks or take a fishing cruise, suitable for all ages and abilities. At Badachro there are Shellfish Safaris where you experience reeling in your own creel full of Lobsters and prawns. Indoor activities can be found at Gairloch Leisure Centre including archery, a climbing wall and badminton as well as a swimming pool.
Scotland’s only working perfume studio is at Mellon Charles and it has a cafe and gift shop as well as excellent views of Loch and Isle Ewe. Visit Inverewe Gardens, famed for their exotic and colourful plants and with several trails and paths. There are, of course, sites of historical interest including an award-winning museum which is well worth a visit. Whatever your interests the Wester Ross area will not disappoint.
