This charming and comfortable, apartment is situated on the top floor of the Moat House, 2 minutes from the centre of the Loch Ness side village of Fort Augustus, in the heart of the Great Glen. Understandably, given its superb setting in this central location, (Fort Augustus is in the geographical centre of the Highlands of Scotland) it is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the Highlands - The gateway to Loch Ness.
Through the village runs the River Oich and the picturesque Caledonian canal and lock system, built by Thomas Telford in the early 1800's. Restaurants, bars and shops are all available in the village.
Set in the original Moat House, the apartment is situated on the top floor of the building, so is not suitable for disabled visitors. Fort Augustus Abbey is a magnificent building which stands in 20 acres of beautifully maintained garden grounds at the southern end of Loch Ness and which, until recently, was home to an order of Saint Benedictine monks. The Abbey is surrounded on three sides by the waters of the Caledonian Canal, Loch Ness and two rivers.
The accommodation is warm and cosy throughout the year and is an ideal retreat for those wanting to spend some quality time walking and relaxing and for quietly enjoying the refined and relaxed atmosphere of this historic Abbey. It is close to the Great Glen cycle way and many miles of forest walks with many forest and hill walks from the doorstep. The proximity to attractions also makes this a favourite destination for young families, with Fort William (Ben Nevis) and Inverness only an hour away by car. The West coast is also only a little over an hours drive.
Once up the challenging stairs, this proved to be a comfortable flat in lovely unique surrounds. Well equipped it has most items needed for a few days away. However the 2nd bedroom, more convenient than the Master, would be a better utilised as a single room as the double bed takes up most of the floor space. Sound proofing is not brilliant and one is aware of other neighbours at times. Having said that it is a flat and in fairness when it was quiet it was a very peaceful.
Excelent appartment, excelent location, excelent facilities. In minutes you fill like at home and you are sad when leaving ... simply enjoy the days :)
We had a wonderful week from 4.6.-11.6.2013 in Fort Augustus. Our apartment was located in the Old Moat House at the Abbey, and it had an impressive atmosphere. Everything was expanded very modern and we felt very comfortable in the old venerable walls. Everything was absolutely amazing. We are sure we will be back!
This apartment was fantastic, better than home!!! Perfect for our family of four, having a seperate space upstairs for the kids was wonderful! The place was very nicely decorated with georgeous warm tartan on the floors and furniture it had a real home feel to it! The views of the Abbey from the windows add that medieval feel to the place, it was like staying in a castle!!! There is no internet access in the apartment but they have a room in the abbey with access if you need it. Awesome!!!
This property was excellent. The quality of the furnishings was of a very high standard and the environment within the Abbey was delightful. Fort Augustus is a very picturesque village with lots of interesting places to eat (and drink) whilst watching the boats passing through the locks. There are also a good number of walks around the area providing magnificent views of Loch Ness. Unfortunately the monster did not grace us with his (her) presence . I would certainly recommend this to anyone.
