Exploring Aultmore’s Stunning Surroundings

Gairloch is home to many glorious beaches, the most famous of which being the appropriately named Big Sand. You’ll even find a small pebble beach right at the bottom of the garden at Aultmore!

If you want to get out on the water, rent a kayak and paddle around the peninsula, or spot dolphins, minke whales and seabirds on a whale watching boat trip. The sea is not the only natural attraction you will find in Gairloch. Surrounded by mountains and lochs, Gairloch is the perfect place to immerse yourself in the Highlands’ breathtaking nature. All around Aultmore you can find grassland rich in wildflowers, home to many species of nesting birds. Just east of the village is Loch Maree, Scotland's fourth largest freshwater loch.

Despite its small size, you’ll find all the amenities you need in the village. There are several shops and restaurants to choose from. There is a small supermarket in the village, although you might want to stock up on less common items before your journey. Pop in to the GALE centre to get advice and up to date information about local services and weather (with a cup of tea or coffee!).

For those more active guests the leisure centre is situated closeby which has a fitness suite, climbing wall, court hire for short tennis and badminton and various classes are also available. For the swimmer the nearest pool would be at Poolewe.  The Gairloch Golf Club also offers the opportunity to combine sport and nature, with beautiful sea and mountain views. If culture is more your cup of tea, make a visit to the Gairloch museum and learn about local nature and the history of the West Coast. Located within a former Cold War nuclear bunker, the museum was granted the ArtFund Museum of the Year award in 2020.
