Fort Augustus itself caters well for the visitor, with a good range of small shops and places to eat and drink. Experience Loch Ness itself with a trip with Cruise Loch Ness, various trips are available from a leisurely cruise to an action packed rib trip. For the walker various hikes are available and the Great Glen Way passes through the village, ideal for the walker or cyclist. The Caledonian Canal, running from Inverness to Fort William also passes through the village, and many an hour can be taken up by watching the various boats and activity on it.
Fort William is located an hour south and is classed as being the ‘Outdoor Capital of the UK’, and together with being home to Ben Nevis, the area is also known for the skiing and winter activities at the Nevis Range. The nearby village of Drumnadrochit (19 mile) has a good range of facilities including a number of pubs, restaurants and a small supermarket. The village is also home to the Loch Ness Monster Exhibition and on the outskirts Urquhart Castle can be found. Further afield the historic village of Beauly is located, home to a unique collection of shops including the Old School which sells an array of Scottish goods and Corner on the Square, a licensed delicatessen and restaurant overlooking the square.
Croft Cabin offers a perfect base for exploring, with the City of Inverness and all its attractions just 34 miles away, and the Isle of Skye and the west coast within a ninety minute drive. If travelling to Skye, stop off and visit Eilean Donan Castle near Dornie, one of the most famous of Scotland’s Castles and certainly the most photographed. At Kyle of Lochalsh take the bridge across to Skye and visit such places as Dunvegan Castle or Talisker Distillery, or spend your time enjoying the magnificent scenery including the Cuillin hills.
