Calluna Cottage is situated in the small picturesque village of Arivruaich on the Island of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. Located only 18 miles north of Tarbert and 18 miles south of Stornoway, its position is an ideal spot to discover both Lewis and Harris. The location is also a perfect place to relax and enjoy the peace and tranquillity, while observing the local varied wildlife from the cottage.
Calluna Cottage is well presented and equipped to a good standard. With one bedroom the accommodation is ideal for two guests, however an additional guest can stay as there is a small sofa-bed available. The house has an unusual layout with the bedroom, kitchen and shower room on the lower level, and upstairs the entire floor given over to a spacious open plan sitting room/lounge. The kitchen is well equipped and has dining for four, the bedroom has a king size bed and the shower room a mains fed shower. The upstairs area has a TV area at one end with the sofa-bed and at the other, armchairs for four. This room is spacious and light and the dormer windows ideal for viewing the magnificent scenery.
Often thought to be separate islands, Lewis and Harris are actually areas of the same island divided by mountains. The northern two-thirds is called the Isle of Lewis and the southern third the Isle of Harris. Arivruaich village if located five miles from the border, making Calluna Cottage ideal as a base to visit both areas. Harris tends to be very hilly and Lewis quite flat in comparison. The main town on Lewis is Stornoway which offers a good range of facilities. On Harris the main population centre would be Tarbert.
You can from the cottage, enjoy the outdoors whether kayaking, cycling or walking - the Hebridean Way is closeby. For climbers, the North Harris hills are quite accessible and are wild and unspoilt. This is the habitat of a great number of golden eagles, red deer and is also home to Sea eagles, red grouse and mountain hares. The Clisham at 799m is the highest point in the Outer Hebrides with spectacular views from its summit to Lewis in the North, South Harris and - on a clear day - St Kilda in the West.
Visit the galleries exhibiting and selling local Hebridean art and jewellery and the regular craft market of locally made goods. There is, of course, the now world-renowned Harris Gin distillery. The cottage is perfectly located for exploring the island and all it has to offer. Many of the beautiful white sandy beaches are just a short drive away with plenty of lovely cafes to stop for lunch or coffee. Whatever you want to experience of modern-day life or the history, crofting and seafaring traditions of the island, it is all accessible from Calluna Cottage.
Caledonian MacBrayne www.calmac.co.uk operates direct ferry services from Uig on the Isle of Skye to Tarbert (1 hour 40 minutes crossing) or alternatively Ullapool to Stornoway (2 hours 30 minutes crossing). From either ferry driving to the property is about a 30 minute drive. Due to these ferries being extremely busy it is highly recommended that you book in advance.
Stornoway Airport (21 miles) has regular connections with Aberdeen, Inverness, Edinburgh and Glasgow. These flights are operated by www.loganair.co.uk Once here car hire would be available.
The owner allows two well behaved pets at the property, no additional charges apply. Please note that the garden is not enclosed.
A Good Housekeeping Deposit of £100.00 is required at the property.
