Leachachan Barn - Letterfearn, Loch Duich

Sleeps 4 - Wood Burning Stove - Pets Welcome

Leachachan Barn sits in an enviable shoreline location on the banks of Loch Duich. This unique property has been sympathetically converted and retains much of its original character, and this contrasts beautifully, with the contemporary interior it now provides. Inside the property certainly has the wow factor, this is open plan living at its best, with a full height vaulted ceiling, and floor to ceiling picture windows, ideally situated to take full advantage of the views of Loch Duich and the magnificent mountain range of the Five Sisters of Kintail.

Inside the property is furnished with an eclectic mix of modern and traditional furniture, the open plan lounge, kitchen and dining area, is a perfect place for the whole family to relax after a day exploring. Throughout the property has beautiful wooden floors and benefits from wifi internet access. In the lounge area the large comfortable sofas are placed not only to enjoy the view, but the warmth from the striking wood burner in the corner. Additional facilities out with this area on the ground floor include, a spacious master bedroom, again with a large picture window, a large utility room, and a shower room.

Upstairs a mezzanine area houses a second bedroom with twin beds, and a small seating area with a television, a perfect place to enjoy the view to the lounge below. Outside the property an enclosed garden is ideal for anyone taking a pet, and located to the rear of the property in an elevated position is a summer house. From the outside guests will notice the striking wooden shutters which can be used if required during the hours of darkness.

Homes & Interiors Scotland Magazine recently ran an article on Leachachan Barn, you can read what they had to say here.

Loch Duich is home to the most iconic of Scotland’s Castles, Eilean Donan, the castle recognised throughout the world has featured in many major films and today you can explore almost every part of it. The Castle also has its own visitor centre and gift shop. Further afield Kyle of Lochalsh is within thirty minutes, and offers a good range of facilities for the visitor. From here guests can take the bridge over the sea to the Isle of Skye, a fabulous day out, and well worth a visit to enjoy the many activities and attractions available including boat trips, historic castles and even a distillery.

North from the property the picturesque village of Plockton lies on the shores of Loch Carron, unusually palm trees line the main street and the village is popular with artists and photographers. The village also offers a small range of shops and a number of quality establishments for lunch or dinner, a popular choice being the Plockton Hotel, which serves the best of the local seafood. Travelling around Loch Carron takes you north to the Applecross Peninsula, Shieldaig and the Torridon mountains. The landscape here is relatively unspoilt and the scenery some of the most dramatic in Scotland.

We very much enjoyed our stay at Leachachan Barn. The property is beautifully renovated and has superb views. We found our stay very relaxing. Also, we found the barn was very well kitted out. It was really helpful that items such as plenty of washing up liquid, toilet rolls, salt & pepper etc. were provided. This was really useful. Overall, a very unique property. I would highly recommend.

First stayed in the barn 8 years ago and always said we would return, we stay in a cottage 4 or 5 times a year and have been all over Scotland but this has to be the best cottage views out them all , we spent the evenings watching the changing views of the 5 sisters and never had the tv on once A fantastic base for visiting the surrounding areas , Glenelg, Skye , Plockton etc . The only fault we could find with the cottage was the poor, uneven flooring between the front door and the bedroom, it really could do with being fixed but it wouldn't stop us from returning again Book it , you won't regret it

What a super house! Its been said by others, but can stand saying again - the house is wonderfully designed, spendidly equipped, and perfectly located. It was very nicely prepared and presented for us. We met the charming gentleman who tends to the property both inside and out who gave us tips about where to walk and where to eat. The house has left its mark on us. After playing the piano in the house ( for the first time in over 50 years ) ( how many holiday cottages offer this ? ) one of the first things we did on our return was to order one of our own; and we fell for the wonderfully efficient log burner ( yes, we did not have the best of weather) and plan to replace ours with one similar. This was our first dealings with Wilderness Cottages, and we suspect it will not be our last. We have a "house rule" which states that we never return to any holiday location - but if we didn't, we would !!

Leachachan Barn is a delightful place to stay - in our case this was for a week, but longer would be much better if we had the time. The barn is really well appointed and certainly had everything we could ask for. A completely secure garden is a great bonus when you bring your dog. The surrounding area is beautiful and offers many places to visit and some fantastic walks. This was our second time at Leachachan, and it will not be our last.

To be honest I should be telling everyone how bad the barn is because as soon as everyone knows it's as good as it is - it will be booked up and we won't be able to book again. But I will take the risk. As soon as we arrived at Leachachan barn we felt at home. The setting is one of the most beautiful parts of the World with fantastic views. The barn is so comfy and cosy. No TV downstairs but this we loved. Instead we played chess, piano, meditated, did yoga and chilled out with a wee dram in front of the log fire. Our dogs loved it - especially the fire and the fantastic walks. The barn is well equipped and obviously loved by the owners and visitors. Every little thing has been thought of. The beds are so comfy - especially the pillows. We will def be visiting this barn again. Only thing I would change is the barncould do with a couple of champagne glasses (it was New Years) and a few music books for the piano. It's fabulous - but please go somewhere else and leave this barn for us ????

This is a beautiful property set in a picturesque location. Everything about it was brilliant, we loved the fire after a day of exploring, and the bottle of Talisker was a lovely touch. The property has ample facilities for a week or 2 away, the road in front of the barn isn't too busy, but its worth noting the barn is a short distance away from a Salmon fishery so you do get workers etc travelling down at various points. Its in a stunning location with easy access to a lot of things to do. We took a drive to Talisker beach, it was rainy throughout but still stunning, the drive down to the small parking area was bumpy and it seems that the local landowner has a slight issue with people parking up as he suggested the council come down regularly to ticket vehicles. You can actually see Eillean Doonan castle from the front garden if you squint, and if you follow the road to the left in front of the house you get a great view of the castle from the opposite side of the loch. The castle has a lovely cafe serving decent food, and there is a bakehouse a short distance away too. The CO-OP at Kyle of Lochalsh has a good selection of food and nibbles if you run out. Well worth a mention is the beach at Glenelg, lovely wide sandy beach with some fantastic views. We always travel with our little dogs, one of which has mobility issues, so we can't take her on huge walks. it was just nice to lay on the huge comfy sofas and watch the loch. Well worth the journey from South Yorkshire. Thanks for letting us stay

The only thing that would stop us from returning are the beds. The pillows and mattress were too soft, but this is obviously down to personal choice. What a truly fabulous week we spent in this beautiful place. Everything exceeded our expectations. Apart from the unreliable Scottish weather which didnt matter too much as we could enjoy the views unfolding before us on the sofas each morning, feeling very warm and cosy by the fire. The decor is just our cup of tea. We all love to cook and everything was on hand that we needed. Many a fun night was spent eating nice meals around the table followed by a game of scrabble. The walks are delightful and we regularly saw the local seal also the otter who didnt seem to mind us watching him as he fished and ate what he caught. The Sea Eagle apparently flew past but we were not looking up, but he is around. Two lovely friendly pigs over the wall of the Chocolate factory also. This has got to be one of the most beautiful holiday homes we have stayed in, no awful leather sofas in sight, some places seem more akin to an old folks home. We apprecaited all the quirky features and design particulary the Candelabras which we lit every night. Will certainly be booking this again.

All good things come to those who wait and because of Covid I had to move this holiday exactly one year on from the same date in 2020. Gorgeous. Leachachan Barn is without doubt a wonderful example of what the northwest of Scotland has to offer in quality holiday accommodation. The barn is clean, comfortable, tasteful and very well equipped. As with any property designed by Rural Design in Portree (we've previously stayed in a few and we're very much fans) the property is very oriented towards enjoying the best views of the location. And what a location it is!! One could never tire of the views on offer, in particular the picture window looking directly at the Five Sisters of Kintail, with the ever changing light and weather creating countless different scenes of a wonderfully framed landscape. Take a photo, and I guarantee you'll be back out minutes later for another and another. For dog walkers, there is a fabulous forestry track behind the property winding effortlessly up the hill to outstanding viewpoints overlooking Loch Duich. The locale has much to offer also. For many years we've passed en route to Skye & Wester Ross, always with the intention of exploring the Glenelg Peninsula but not affording the time. With our week at Leachachan Barn, we finally got to thoroughly enjoy this headland. As a keen driver I can now add the Bealach Ratagan to my collection of special Scottish roads, it really is a joy to drive with spectacular views over Loch Duich and Skye's Sleat Peninsula with the Cuillin peaking through. For those who enjoy history there are some amazing brochs near Glenelg (the most complete examples on the Scottish mainland), ruins of the 17th century barracks, and of course Eilean Donan Castle. Hill walkers have an abundance of options (see WalkHighlands.com). Domestic provisions can be sourced without much difficulty; eggs and vegetables are on offer from neighbours in the village; there are small shops in Glenelg and Dornie, a Spar at Balmacara and if requiring more then Kyle of Lochalsh has a Co-Op, butcher, pharmacy, hardware shop, chippy, etc. A small but warm recommendation for Glenshiel Chocolates at Ratagan, a much enjoyed treat. We thoroughly enjoyed of week at Leachachan Barn, and would not hesitate to book again. This property definitely is filed under 'return in future', and is ideal for us when we're not bringing a larger party of relatives. To the owners (and whoever is tasked with preparing the property for entry), we offer our utmost thanks, it was an absolute pleasure.

The perfect cottage from which to explore the West Highlands and Skye, and in our case, with a dog. The barn itself is so beautifully designed and equipped that we could have quite happily spent the entire week not moving, hypnotised by the drama of the fast changing skies and light against the loch and mountains right outside the door, framed by the massive picture windows. After days out and walks getting a bit wet and tired, there was nothing better than having a lovely hot shower (brilliant water pressure and immediate hot water!) followed by a wee dram, sitting on the sofas with a log on the wood burner. As the barn is such a wonderful place to be on the long summer evenings, we cooked at home most nights and it was such a treat/rarity to have all the pots, pans, utensils, good quality crockery and cutlery that meant you could cook properly and enjoy supper without the usual rental cottage compromises. The bed is extremely comfortable too. The location of the barn is perfect as there are so many great walks from the garden gate, including along the loch and up into the ancient woods at the end, but it's also a great base for exploring the mountains and remote villages and beaches of Glenelg and beyond on the mainland or Skye itself. We will most definitely be back!

Had a nice stay in this lovely converted barn at a superb location! Slightly let down by its competitors in that there was no light left on for us arriving (in the pitch black!), a couple of bulbs were out in the house including the front door light, the TV is in one of the bedrooms on the mezzanine level so not very handy if sharing, having the microwave and toaster in the utility is not practical when cooking, and the shower needs a good scrub as the grout is very dirty. Overall nice stay though as the scenery of the 5 sisters is what sells the place.

We saw Leachachan Barn on line when we were looking for somewhere to go on Honeymoon and came across the barn it looked perfect both in facilities and location. When we arrived we were blown away it was as described but so much more. We spent the last week completely chilled out enjoying the Wood burning stove and comfy couches whilst the rain sleat snow and sunshine went about its daily business providing hourly changes in the view. The bottle of Whiskey was a lovely touch and went down well!! We can't recommend the barn highly enough and will be back for sure. You made our honeymoon perfect. Thankyou Michael & Lynne and Wee Kodi

After our 4th visit to the Barn we have returned home refreshed and relaxed from such a lovely stay. We never tire of the view over Loch Duich and the 5 Sisters, from the comfort of the living room and the wood burner. A very special place to stay.

My wife and I enjoyed a fantastic week staying at Leachachan Barn. It's hard to imagine a nicer and more relaxing place to stay. The accomadation was everything we expected it to be from reading previous reviews. A credit to the owners.

Beautiful house, great and quiet location. It was a perfect start into our holidays to get away from everydays stress. Well the nice weather we enjoyed during the whole week was probably helping out a bit here. Who said it always rains in Scotland?

Great place to stay and relax. Lovely redevelopment of this barn. Even if the weather is not the best this is the best place to stay and watch it all through the big windows. Well appointed property with everything your need and more

We had a very nice stay in this cozy house. Even the few rainy days we have enjoyed, because then you can sit by the fireplace an thereby has the incredible views from the large picture windows. The interior of the house is complemented very well thought out with lots of lovely details. An when it's dark, you have a good view of the beautiful illuminated Eilean Donan Castle. What more could you want?

An amazing property with the most stunning view. Each morning was spent watching the sun rise over the snow-capped Five Sisters of Kintail. Great location with good access to the Isle of Skye, the lovely Glenelg road, Loch Cluanie and even up toward Torridon if you fancy. Excellent for dog owners with a fully enclosed garden and a good skelp of land for the outdoor dog to roam around. Handy path from just outside the property up a hill with lovely views. Can't wait to return.

Enjoyed a week in this fantastic converted barn! What an absolute pleasure - even with the worst weather Scotland could throw at us the barn was a great place to be inside, fire burning, watching the wild, weather through the enormous windows!!! Having seen the photos our expectations were high - the barn was even better than we imagined. Highly recommend staying here - we loved it!

An absolute wonderful house! The architect has done a great job and the owners have filled the barn with lovely details and high standard equipment. (including the excellent equipped kitchen!) As an former visitor said ... i can't get enough from watching the changing lights of the Five Sisters of Kintail. We will return next year to explore the rest of the North West Highlands and relax and enjoy this location again!

A wonderful place to stay for a quiet week. Opening the shutters to reveal the view for the first time was an absolute delight. We loved the interior especially the moss green sofas and wooden flooring. We didn't need the TV as the weather and sunsets changing the colours on the mountains kept us entertained. A great location for shortwalks and long expeditions. Discovering the iron age broch at the end of the peninsular was a great experience.

Beautifully converted barn with huge picture windows that make the most of the spectacular view of the Five Sisters of Kintail. Very clean and comfortable but lack of microwave and having fridge, freezer and dishwasher in utility area rather than in the kitchen made things a little awkward. Open plan living would possibly be a problem for families as tv in extension to upstairs bedroom. Overall, well equipped, beautifully appointed and perfectly located for scenery and walks. Would recommend.
