Seal Skerry Lodge, Lower Milovaig, Glendale

Sleeps 4 - One Pet Welcome - Wood Burner

Seal Skerry Lodge sits in an elevated position and enjoys panoramic views across Loch Pooltiel and to the Outer Hebrides. The house was purpose designed for the rigours of the Highlands and Islands by the award winning Rural Design Architects. The design follows the lines of a traditional steading, and offers a stylish and contemporary property, ideal for those guests looking for something more unusual than the more traditional holiday cottages that are often found on the island.

This modern property is spacious, light and airy and the windows are positioned to take full advantage of the outstanding views. Tastefully and stylishly furnished throughout Seal Skerry Lodge is equipped to a high standard and wifi is available. The house incorporates the latest technology and this together with the wood burning stove, ensures that the property is warm no matter what time of year you visit.

The accommodation is located over two levels, with the downstairs featuring an open plan living area, with floor to ceiling windows, oak flooring and a beautiful wood burner. A chaise lounge is ideally positioned to enjoy the views and a telescope is available for those interested in a bit of star gazing or wildlife watching. Further facilities on this level included a well equipped kitchen complete with a range cooker, a utility room and a shower room.

The bedrooms are located on the first floor, a master with a king size bed and a twin, the bedrooms feature quality cotton bed linen and enjoy views to the sea loch below. A fabulous bathroom with its stand alone bath and twin wash basins, completes the facilities on this level. Outside the property has an area of decking with garden furniture, ideal for a bit of alfresco dining after a day exploring, and the garden is fully enclosed making it ideal for the dog owner.

Glendale is a large community-owned estate with an inspiring history. In the 1800s, the people of Glendale suffered from high rents and extreme restrictions placed upon them by the landowners. Fed up with the status quo, the crofters began to protest, resulting in the arrest and imprisonment of three men. A monument to the “Glendale Martyrs” is atop a hill near Colbost. The crofters’ fight resulted in law reform and the community's purchase of the estate.

Glendale Village is a small settlement of white-walled cottages. Stop at Cafe Lephin for a light lunch, home bakes or a taste of local ales. Just across the road, the Glendale shop is a handy spot to make purchases of basic supplies. To stock up on bigger food shop, you may need to visit the village of Dunvegan or the supermarkets in the island’s largest villages of Portree and Broadford.

A trip to the westernmost tip of Skye is an unmissable experience. Neist Point is a finger of land made of undulating cliffs, jutting out into the sea. Made from basalt, the rock is shaped like columns, reminiscent of the Giants Causeway. At the cliff edge sits the lighthouse, an excellent subject for breathtaking photos. You’d better bring your binoculars as this rugged place is home to all kinds of animals. Seals, whales, dolphins, porpoises and otters inhabit the sea, while many bird species swoop overhead. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of sea eagles!

Foodies won’t be disappointed by this remote corner of Skye. One of Scotland’s most famous restaurants is only a 15-minute drive away! The Three Chimneys has won over 30 awards and attracts diners from all over the world. Another popular restaurant is Chidashaka, which pairs innovative vegetarian dishes with rare teas. For hearty home-cooked grub, head to the Old School Restaurant in Dunvegan.

Dunvegan is also home to Scotland’s oldest inhabited castle. Spend the day exploring the castle’s excellently preserved rooms, decorated in the 19th century. Wander around the leafy gardens and feel your worries melt away. In summer, boat tours depart from the castle jetty to the Loch Dunvegan seal colony, where you will get the opportunity to see hundreds of these adorable animals.

Seal Skerry Lodge is a fantastic base for visiting the Isle of Skye, conveniently located in the North West of the island. For photography enthusiasts, its proximity to Neist Point and its iconic Lighthouse, just a 10-minute drive,is a major advantage.

The house is exceptionally well-appointed, providing everything needed for a week-long holiday. Our party of two, plus our dog, found it absolutely perfect. We visited in late October, expecting the mixed weather, which included two very windy nights. The log burner was a real highlight, keeping us wonderfully cosy.

We did find the bath a minor inconvenience; it took a long time to fill, and the seating position coincided with the plug, meaning the water began to drain as soon as one settled in. Consequently, we opted for the shower for the remainder of the trip, but this was a very small issue overall. The bedrooms were very spacious, offering ample hanging space. Personally, I would have preferred a larger double bed or two singles zipped together.

Driving on Skye was generally easy, and we encountered no road issues, though be aware that the house is accessed via a 20-minute drive down a single-track road with passing places. Those less comfortable with this type of road might prefer to avoid driving at night, which we did as a precaution.

Despite this, the house itself is amazing. The views of Loch Pooltiel and the high cliffs are spectacular, even in the rain when you can watch huge waterfalls cascade down. The property was clean and tidy and suited our needs perfectly. There's a small, enclosed garden (grassed area with a gravel drive), which was ideal for our dog. I made it a point to walk down to the nearby jetty most days for the dog's early walk before we headed out.

We were incredibly lucky to witness the Aurora Borealis during our stay, with its reflection clearly visible in the loch even to the naked eye. We also spotted numerous seals on nearby rocks, and a Sea Eagle flew overhead one morning. Wildlife sightings would likely be even better during the summer months.

Seal Skerry Lodge is well-located for exploring the main sights on Skye, though it is a considerable distance from places like Elgol. Do make sure to visit the very well-stocked village shop in Glendale.

Overall, we had a great holiday in a wonderful house and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Skye.

This was our 5th stay at Seal Skerry Lodge and we would never stay anywhere else. It is a true home from home for us.

When you arrive there is always a lovely bottle of wine awaiting you, a handbook with all the information you could possibly need for your stay on Skye, a log fire already prepped and ready for you to light and most importantly spotlessly clean.

The garden is fully enclosed for all doggie lovers and even has a hose outside to clean those paws and wellies.

All the details of having games to play in the cupboard, books to read, a telescope to view the amazing wild life, fishing boats and landscape, use of the washing machine, tumble drier, dish washer, Ninja air fryer, the list goes on... To ensure that you have everything you need to relax and enjoy.

We cannot wait for our next stay.

We have stayed at Seal Skerry previously, and just as before it is a fabulous house in a fantastic location with immersive views: seals seen on the skerry below every day. Our stay at Seal Skerry was very relaxing with much of the attractions of north Skye very accessible. Our dog also seemed to enjoy the stay in an enclosed garden which he was safe to roam and explore. Hopefully we will be back soon.
