The Studio, Balmeanach, Dunvegan

Sleeps 4 - WiFi - Wood Burner - Sorry No Pets

The Studio is a beautiful and stylish property located just six miles from Dunvegan in the small township of Balmeanach. Sleeping four, this contemporary house was designed by the award-winning Dulachas Architects. Its location is an ideal base for exploring with the Skye Bridge only one hour’s drive away and Portree, the island's capital, a 30-minute drive.

Tastefully furnished and equipped to a good standard throughout, the accommodation is located on one level.  The main living area is open plan with striking floor-to-ceiling windows which offer awe-inspiring views to the Cullin Mountains and the ever-changing sky. The main living area is open plan; the kitchen is well equipped with all the usual appliances and has a large island unit for dining; the sitting area has a comfortable sofa and leather armchair, both ideally positioned to view the large wall-mounted TV. Throughout, the house has electric radiators and in this area a wood burner, ideal for relaxing in front of after a day of exploring. Direct access is available to the garden and to the large decked area to the front.

The property has two bedrooms; the king, with its en-suite, is located to the front and offers access to the garden and decking. The en-suite is certainly a ‘room with a view’ and has a large walk-in shower. The twin bedroom is located to the rear of the property and has an adjacent shower room. Both bedrooms have good quality bed linen, and towels are provided. The Studio does have an enclosed garden, and parking is available for 2-3 cars. The decking does have a small drop to the garden, which makes it unsuitable for children under five; however, babies are welcome, and a travel cot and high chair are available.

The nearest town to the property is Dunvegan, which offers a few restaurants, a petrol station, a shop and a local bakery. On the outskirts, Dunvegan Castle, home of the Clan MacLeod for the last 800 years, is well worth a visit, as are the pretty coral beaches. Further afield Portree is the main population area on the island, the pretty harbour is particularly striking with its coloured buildings, and from here boat trips can be taken. The town has lots of interesting shops selling the best of the local manufacturers and many choices for lunch or dinner.

The island offers some of the most dramatic scenery in Scotland; the Quiraing, Old Man of Storr and the spectacular Trotternish Ridge are well worth a visit. Neist Point and its Lighthouse can be found at the most north-west point on the island, and the sunsets here are quite spectacular. Basking sharks, dolphins, seals and whales are can often be spotted along with a large variety of birds, including the majestic Golden Eagle.

My sister and I enjoyed a week on Skye in September at the Studio. It is a beautiful, spacious, contemporary holiday home all on one level with a patio the length of the property from which we saw some wonderful sunrises. Most of the main attractions are within easy reach of the studio by car. My advice is set off to see them early in the morning. Single track roads get very busy with motor homes mid morning on and can be a bit of a nightmare. Dunvegan is a short drive away and really useful for shops and restaurants. Strongly advise you reverse down the short, steep driveway or do as we did and park at the top of the drive next to the gate. The studio is a great place to stay!

Excellent house for a quiet retreat on Skye. Well equipped and cosy on the wildest of summer days with wonderful views of the Cullins on occasion!

Thanks for the brilliant stay so we can still enjoy the peace and beautiful Isle of Skye in the horrible weather. We will come back again.

A lovely comfortable stay. Very convenient for north of the island. Enjoyed watching the deer on the hill outside and the occasionall view of the distant Cuillin. Unfortunately we couldn't get the car down the steep drive for unloading as everything was so overgrown. Reported this and a problem with the shower on arrival but nothing was done while we were there.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and feedback on The Studio. We are glad you enjoyed your stay however disappointed to hear about the issues experienced with the shower and overgrown garden. As Wilderness Cottages are the booking agents, we have contacted the caretaker to discuss your feedback. He has confirmed the shower issue is now resolved and passes on his sincere apologies. He has also advised, due to unexpected heavy rainfall, there has been a delay in garden maintence but to confirm, they will be attending this week.

This is a really lovely, well-designed house in a great location for exploring the whole island. There is complete peace and quiet, and sheep were grazing just outside. With comfortable beds, great views, lots of guide books/ maps for hiking trails, and games to play, it really is very well equipped (although contrary to other reviewers we didn't find salt/pepper/oil when we arrived, so I guess it depends what the previous guests leave behind!). My whole family enjoyed it (2 teens), and I would definitely come again.

The Studio is a stylish, modern very well equipped residence in an excellent location and we had a wonderful week on Skye staying at The Studio. If we had any critical comments they would be that the surroundings require a good tidy up and the gate needs some attention.
