Old Lock Keepers Cottage

We have just returned home from our stay at this really super cottage in a delightful location. I don't think we have ever stayed anywhere where so much was provided in the weekly package. A genuine thank you in appreciation to the owners. Watching the boats, from small to really huge(ocean going size) pass through the lock is mesmerising. After storm Amy our arrival was delayed by a day as the cottage was without water or electricity but our thanks to cleaning staff as it was spic and span on our arrival although the cottage phone and Wifi was unavailable and still off when we left today although didn't cause a problem to us. We really rate wilderness cottage staff and would also rate them 5*. Thanks

We had a wonderful week's stay at the Earth House. We arrived just before Storm Amy and had a front row view of the stormy seas over the weekend - just amazing. The location is absolutely brilliant for bird watching and we were also lucky enough to see otters fishing on a couple of days. The Earth House itself is very special place & such a thoughtful design; we absolutely loved staying there. One of us is a wheelchair user and the house being all on one level made our stay very easy. We ordered supplies from the very helpful Laide Stores and enjoyed the fresh fish van that comes in a Tuesday. Did I mention the awesome views across Gruinard Bay?! With the ever changing light & stunning scenery it is an artists paradise. We have already booked another week for next year.

Wilderness Cottages were great to deal with! We were coming over from the US to Scotland for the first time, and on a whim decided to book with Wilderness. Found the PERFECT place in Fort Augustus, and all the directions and communications from Wilderness were spot on. I even had a bit of trouble using their links to make payment and they were able to help me with that. I hope to book with them again in the near future.

High Tor House is a wonderful location, just outside Tarbert toward Scalpay. The views are phenomenal and the house is very comfortable, has a well appointed, modern interior. Another lovely time at Charleston. Always spotless and well presented with amazing views. Our new dog was in her element in the safe garden. Lovely to watch a small herd of deer grazing in the surrounding fields. A little scary when Storm Amy rolled up. Being alone on the hill the winds roared and heavens opened but all part of the experience. Looking forward to our next visit!

A lovely cottage with an amazing view of the beach right outside the lounge window. The cottage was warm, clean, well equipped and the bed was very comfy. I think if 4 guests stayed you'd find the kitchen very cramped with the put up table. Its a great spot to do the scenic NC500 route to Applecross - a real experience. Only negative really was the limited parking (layby gets full and there really is nowhere else nearby) and the very narrow, rocky track down to the cottage, which was tricky to negotiate in pouring rain.

In nearly 50 years of self-catering holidays we can honestly say that this is the nicest cottage, location and host we have experienced. It's within easy reach of Peebles yet remote enough to forget civilisation, surrounded by gorgeous scenery, has great walks from the door and is well equipped, clean and cosy. It's beautifully decorated, with interesting and unique features and comfortable furniture. We consider ourselves lucky to have found this exceptional cottage and to have met Brendon who has created something very special here. Will we return? Absolutely!!

Lots to see on the west coast my favourite being Isle of Arran and just outside kilberry village seeing the seals at the waters edge was a treat. Matheson's Croft House

We had a very peaceful and restful week at Matheson's Croft House and felt very comfortable in the house. Cooking with the Rayburn proved to be an art form, having never used one before. However, we did get there and the heat, even on a low setting, was sufficient to keep us cosy and warm and we were able to dispense with the microwave. This property has a great 'loo with a view', our bed was very comfortable and we slept really well. The only downside for us is that the garden has grown a lot and so does obscure some of the loch views from the house (not from upstairs), but this is something that could soon be sorted. Easy to get to Skye and lots of interesting places to visit and walk in the area.

The cottage was well kitted out in all areas. In particular the kitchen as we always cook our own meals. We rarely go out. We felt the sitting room a bit "cold". A rug and some bright prints would have helped. The cottage gives easy access to Glen Affric which was the main reason we hired it. But it also gives easy access to Inverness, Fort Augustus or Fort William if the weather is poor. It should be noted that the bus stop is 200 yards from the house next to Urquhart Castle. Saves using the car to these places. Overall, very happy with our time in Strone.

( I did miss having a bird table to watch ) The house is less than 5 minutes drive to Ballater and located in the Cairngorms national park offers many places to visit. Aberdeen is only 40 miles away and Stonehaven with its stunning beaches and Dunnatar castle is only just over an hour away. Balmoral castle and Braemar castle are 10 minutes from the Steading. Enjoyed watching the house martins daily and the neighbours geese who visited every morning. Thank you to the owner Graham who was so kind and helpful. The Old Post Office

We enjoyed our week at the old post office after a shaky start. We had carefully reviewed the cottage details, street walked the location and checked the OS map and satellite - but we hadn't anticipated that getting a VW van and a kayak/ bike trailer up to the cottage would be quite so problematic. The loose gravel on the drive and the angle between it and the road meant we had to unhitch the trailer, unload the bikes and boats, lower the jockey wheel to lift the back end to avoid it grounding on the road and then push it up the drive. We only managed it because a passing car driver stopped and came and helped us. I then spent the week worrying about how we would get it off again (fortunately we had rope, belay device and climbing slings to hand so we roped it off the drive and packed up on the neighbours track). All added a bit of stress to arrival and departure. I'm guessing that the instruction to reverse down the drive is to avoid grounding a vehicle as it joined the road - that worked fine as long as we swung left into the neighbours track. That said, the cottage is really lovely and well equipped and of course a fab location. Might be a bit cramped for 6, but perfect for the two of us. Would be helpful if you could offer somewhere to put bikes and outdoor kit (any room in the shed perhaps?)

Thank you for your feedback and we are sorry to learn that your arrival was not as we would have liked. Its important that guests are as fully informed as they can be for our properties which is why we include as much additional information in our Access Arrangements which are emailed to guests prior to their stay. We note that a more detailed description was included in yours: There is parking for one car on site. To access the parking space, you need to turn tight left into it. However, there is not a 360 degree turning area, so a 3 point turn will not be possible to exit. In order to get out from the parking space, you will need to carefully reverse your car back out. Thank you for your feedback.
